Sixth Mass Extinction
noun
The purported ongoing extinction event during the present Holocene or Anthropocene epoch as a result of human activity. The present extinction rate (100 species per million per year) is estimated to be 1,000 times higher than the natural extinction rate (0.1 species per million per year). The five prior mass extinctions were all caused by natural events.
