1.5°C

noun/adjective
The lower target by which to limit the rise in global average temperature from pre-industrial levels, as established by the IPCC‘s Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, published in 2018.
The climate scientists behind the Report believe that the 1.5°C limit is still within reach, although it has to be achieved by 2030, and would require “deep emissions reductions”, by “rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society”.
At the end of 2019, the global average temperature was estimated to be 1.0°C above pre-industrial levels.

2.0°C

noun/adjective
The absolute goal by which to limit the rise in global average temperature from pre-industrial levels, as established by the IPCC‘s Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C, published in 2018.
Beyond the 2.0°C limit, the irreversible, runaway climate change and feedback loops that would have occurred would result in a high possibility of causing the Sixth Mass Extinction event (including the extinction of humanity) and the destruction of the natural environment as we know it.
Even at 2.0°C, it is estimated that severe heat events would be 2.6 times worse, species decline 2 to 3 times worse, 99 percent of coral reefs would die out, and low-lying coastal areas would be submerged under water as the sea level rises.
At the end of 2019, the global average temperature was estimated to be 1.0°C above pre-industrial levels.
